Linux Not an OS [Jun. 14th, 2005|06:24 pm]
linux sucks

For the record: Linux is not an Operating System. Linux is the kernel that is most commonly used in conjunction with the GNU operating system, giving us GNU/Linux:
"The GNU Hurd is not ready for production use. Fortunately, another kernel is available. In 1991, Linus Torvalds developed a Unix-compatible kernel and called it Linux. Around 1992, combining Linux with the not-quite-complete GNU system [which has been under development since 1984] resulted in a complete, free operating system. (Combining them was a substantial job in itself, of course.) It is due to Linux that we can actually run a version of the GNU system today.

"We call this system version GNU/Linux, to express its composition as a combination of the GNU system with Linux as the kernel."

--Richard M. Stallman
Founder, Free Software Foundation
People who say "Linux Sucks"... Are you referring to Linus's kernel, or are you referring to the entire package, which is often mistakenly referred to as "Linux"? I'm curious. What is it that you have a gripe with? Something along the lines of the way that the kernel "Linux" deals with drivers? Or more something along the lines of the way there are so many different "distros", with just as many package management systems, etc.? Or do you hate parts of the GNU operating system, such as bash, GCC, GNOME, GAWK, Gcron (which is much more secure than Vixie cron), The GIMP, Emacs, GNU GRUB, GnuPG, etc., etc., etc....? Because for someone to say that "Linux Sucks" and mean the overall appearence or something, only to go and use GNOME on a *BSD system is rather hypocritical... wouldn't you say? I mean... what's the difference between jumping on one bandwagon versus the next?

No disrespect meant, I'm just really curious as to what you mean.

Some of you may remember discussion about Ultimate OS.

Due to the interest generated, I've decided to create a community to discuss various features and ideas for OSes.

If you have (constructive) opinions on OSes, we'd love to hear to them.

EDIT: The community name is ultimateos 8)

linux sucks

This isn't strictly linux related, rather it's OS related and linux users are usually interested in OSes.

Short xpost for those of you inclined. I'm creating an operating system and looking for comments on it. At this point, I already have portions written.

This is the post in my journal defining what I consider to be the Ultimate operating system.

You're probably a Linux zealot if you believe [Jul. 2nd, 2004|05:42 pm]

-Outsourcing low skilled jobs is a shining example of capitalism in action, but outsourcing IT jobs is the most evil crime ever - unless Rob Malda works for the company that's doing it.
-Apple's proprietary video format is a brilliant idea, but Microsoft's is an abuse of their market position.
-The large number of worms is enough to get the average user to switch to a secure OS like Linux, even though most of these worms have spread because average users can't be bothered with security.
-Microsoft supported companies running anti-OSS stories is an abuse of power, but Slashdot is an impartial and OSDN owned balanced source of news.
-Linux is as easy to use as Windows, which is why some tech companies make a fortune out of training courses and Bible sized manuals.
-Microsoft are wrong to make money off support fees, but for Redhat it's OK.
-DMA is bad, unless it's for ITunes.
-Interfaces and concepts should not be patentable, unless it allows Apple to file a lawsuit against MS.
-All software should be open source, unless it's owned by Sourceforge or Apple.

linux sucks

I find it amusing, that just because this community is named linux_sucks, that Linux zealots immediatley think we run Windows.

How many of you here, just think Linux sucks and uses an alternative operating system such as Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris, OpenBSD, or some other true UNIX operating system?
